Yes indeed, Polish artist DOROTA NIEZNALSKA was sentenced to 6 months of confinement in her community for "violence to religious feelings." The court case was brought against her by the Polish religious right, the "Polish Families and Polish Youth." Some recommended punishments for the artist from sympathetic Christians (who also catcalled "shame on you!" and "you must be sick!") included shaving her head (the punishment for "sleeping with the Nazis in WWII") and a gang rape.

Whoa .. rewind that: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN POLAND? The closest case I can think of, besides the racism and sexism salvationary, organised religion in general metes out to this Earth on a daily (& nightly) basis, and the well-honed, fascist violence of militant anti-abortionists, would be the artistic persecution of Giuliani vs. Chris Offili and his "Virgin Mary," which was all the rage in 2000. Offili, a Catholic, used shit as a painting medium (which was quite beautiful).But at least the Right was simply trying to shut down the exhibition (& they failed). In Poland, however, we have an artist already sentenced, which sets dangerous precedent, with a blood-thirst "turn-the-other-cheek" public calling for RAPE. Why not just get on with it: why not just call for a witch-burning?

Those </rant> tags are not meant to belittle the force of my writing, but to signal an advance in the fight. For this is a fight, and the name of the enemy is global and it is simple: it is fascism. Right-wing religion has always bled nicely into fascist structures. Italy is an excellent example. It's not a case of "looking like the Nazis," but realising that we, and yes, this is a group responsibility, are acting like them.

But to contextualise my response & to get back to the point, at least a bit of art-history: as one can see in the installation, this is hardly an ultra-contentious work in its depiction of the body and torment (especially compared to the '60s Viennese Aktionismus group or COUM or the political work of Mike Parr on Australian detentionees). Hell -- torment and genitalia ARE CHRIST, this is the ECSTASY of torture promoted all over Catholicism -- the primary complaint against Nieznalksa being that she showed male genitalia, and a man's face "in torment" on a video monitor. I guess this whole Catholic-torment-thing is kind of Italian, and the Northern Poles, although religious, have a hard time of it. I guess these religious types must have some weird sex too--don't look down there, oh no you've seen .. MY PENIS! Quick, we need a gang rape!
